When drifting off, concentrate on solving a waking-state problem and your subconcious might just provide the answers.
Remember your night stories upon awakening by filling a glass with water. Drink half of the water before going to sleep, promising to remember them when you wake up. When you awaken, quickly drink the rest of the water. They will come to you rapid-fire.
If you awaken inside REM and become aware that you are indeed still sleeping, this is called being lucid. This is a rare and higher state of awareness that can with practice, be directed like a movie.
When you are in rapid eye movement sleep, your brain thinks what it sees is real. Question things that seem fake and you might become lucid.
Just prior to falling asleep is when you are most likely to get answers to waking-state problems.
