Lose Weight Now

3/11/09 UPDATE--When I wrote this page I had dropped 22lbs. After a 3 week plateau at 25lbs., I have now dropped a total of 30lbs. This stuff works!

Three months ago I was mired in a years-long struggle to not gain weight by yo-yo dieting and making feeble attempts at weight loss. But old habits die hard, and I always went back to junk food, incessant snacking, huge amounts of fat, sugar, beer, and whatever sounded tasty at the time, no matter how unhealthy. I would over drink, then over eat, then have desert, then go to bed, with no physical activity at all. Several times I had bouts of "reflux" whereby I would barf in my sleep, inhale it, and wake up in a frenzy. I am 5'8", and at the time weighed in at 215 lbs--clinically obese. I got back on the yo-yo and dropped 5 pounds. But I knew nothing had changed. I had to lose weight now.

Just after thanksgiving, 2008, I was grilling chicken, and had just finished off some chips and a hand full of nuts, and thought that if I had a beer, I might not feel any glow because my stomach felt full. I decided to have rum and coke instead, and after several, I over ate, then had dinner (even though I felt full), then I had desert. I woke up at 2:30 AM and felt absolutely horrible, with no end in sight. At that moment I knew I had to change. I had to stop putting crap in my body because that crap was showing big time. I looked in the mirror and instead of sucking in my gut, I shoved it out--I was totally disgusted! I knew I had to LOSE WEIGHT NOW, and start eating healthy foods.

By the way, I'm not telling you how YOU can lose weight, I'm telling you how I did, and how I am continuing to lose more. This works 100% for me. It might work for you if you want to lose weight now too. However, if you aren't willing to do ALL the things required to drop the blubber, you will fail, no matter what diet or lifestyle you attempt.

Once I made my decision to start eating healthy and lose weight now, I checked out all the latest fad diets and decided to create my own, by focusing on my weaknesses. Also, it would have to be sustainable--not some kind of "program" that you start, meet your goal, and then drop. I had to lose weight now and keep it off for life.

First, I decided that to the max extent possible (I have to splurge on occasion), I would eat from four food groups--Fresh Vegetables, Fresh Fruits, Whole Grains, and Lean Meats.

Second, I would eat four meals a day for an average daily calorie intake of 1500-1700 calories. My danger zone is 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM, when I would usually snack on about 500 calories of this or that, then with a full stomach, I would drink 2-4 beers while cooking dinner. On my new lifestyle, rather than grabbing a bag of chips or nuts or whatever at 3:30, I would actually eat what would mentally qualify as a meal--for example, a turkey sandwich and a few carrot sticks and maybe an orange or small apple. The key here, is never let yourself get really hungry. Likewise, don't over eat.

Third, I MUST do some kind of workout almost every day. Sometimes I work out seven times a week, and sometimes three, but I plan on doing something every day for a minimum of 20 minutes--walking, elliptical trainer, sit ups, stair climbing, whatever--before doing any workout, ask your doctor. I am not recommending that YOU work out, I'm telling you what works for me. Working out might not be good for you without proper instruction! Why do I say that? When I was a kid growing up in Michigan, every winter the news would run a story about some fat, sedentary, out of shape person who died while doing nothing more than shoveling snow. So don't get all Ga Ga reading this and after 20 years of nothing, go out and run 10 miles. Winding up dead totally defeats the purpose of trying to be healthy. BEFORE YOU WORK OUT, GET A PHYSICAL! LET YOUR DOCTOR TELL YOU TO WORK OUT, NOT ME. One thing for sure--I can't lose weight now without working out.

Whew--the only reason I harp on that whole DR. supervision thing when it comes to working out is because of the incredible sue-happy state our justice system has fallen into. I am not an authority on weight loss. I am not a doctor. I am not a nutritionist. I am simply relating what works for me so that anyone reading this might take away a tip or two that helps. I am an authority on MY weight loss ONLY. Following anything that I say works for me is at your own risk.

Next I STOPPED DRINKING for the most part. This was the main thing I was not willing to let go of before I was ready to do all the things I knew I needed to do to burn up the unwanted fat. Will I ever drink again? Absolutely, but for the most part 2-4 beers a day is a thing of the past. Drinking used to mean fun. But when going out to dinner revolved around who was driving, it became more of a pain than fun.

It is extremely freeing to know that I can have just as much fun without booze--and look and feel a whole lot better the next day. Alcohol is poison I once heard that your kidneys and liver have over 300 functions. When you drink, your liver and kidneys stop all functions except getting rid of the alcohol. How do I know? You can be totally dehydrated and your urine will be dark. If you are totally dehydrated and then drink booze, your urine will be clear because your body sucks out every bit of moisture it can find to flush out the alcohol and then leaves the impurities that urination is supposed to get rid of INSIDE YOU! That'll just about cover the booze. Drink lots of water, little or no fire water and you might lose weight now.

That's it. That's how I burned 22 pounds of extra fat in nine weeks, and it's still working. To recap, Here is what I did:

1. Eat fresh fruit, fresh veggies, lean meat, and whole grains to the max extent possible.

2. Eat four meals a day of around 400 calories each, of the above foods. Never get super hungry, and don't snack between the four meals--maybe some fruit or sugar free jello only, or sometimes I would eat a small pile of toll house mini chocolate chips. Sometimes you gotta eat a big old hunk of cake too. But only rarely. These things will slow your weight loss, but will not stop it unless you quit. This is not a program--this is the way I live now and for the duration. my lose weight now program works for me, a sugar lovin' fool.

3. Work out most every day, 3 times a week minimum.

4. No drinking for the most part.

After shedding 22 pounds (now it's 30lbs.) I look and feel much better, but I'm only about half way done. My knees and ankles thank me, my guts thank me, and I thank me. It is TOTALLY worth it!

I've been drilling new holes in belts that before barely even fit. My old pants bunch up and I'll be buying new ones soon. When I do buy clothes, if they are slightly snug, I buy them any way because I will stay on the lose weight now lifestyle. I haven't thrown out old clothes yet but that would be a great way of not looking back and sinking into my old way of life. That is not an option.

Every once in a while I absolutely splurge on cake, ice cream, cookies, shakes, Mcdonald's, whatever. Then I observe the weight gain and feel rotten physically, and know that eating junk is not as much fun as your "deprived" state thinks. I will also on occasion have a few drinks. They make me tired, dull and unable to drive, (I won't drive even after 1 drink, ever!). I feel that slight headache, and rancid stomach and realize that the "fun" I get out of drinking is not worth the consequences, especially if I need to be productive that night or the next day. It is freeing to know that I can conduct any activity I want at any time because I have not consumed alcohol where before I would do it almost daily.

Drinking moderately may not affect your functioning in the world, but it will affect your health.
